For all versions of the Linksys WRT54G router, the default password is admin. The WRT54G password iscase sensitive.
The WRT54G default IP address is 192.168.1.1. It's through this address that you're able to access the router's settings and options.
There's no default username for the WRT54G, meaning that you can and should leave this field completely blank when logging in. This is true for most other Linksys routers, too.
All the default data mentioned applies to all versions of the WRT54G that might exist and grants full administrator level privileges.
What to Do If the WRT54G Default Password Won't Work
If the password on your Linksys WRT54G has ever been changed (which is a good thing!) then the default password of admin won't work. It doesn't stick around as a 'backup' password or anything like that.
Your best bet in this case is to reset your WRT54G router to its factory default settings, which will restore all the configurations back to how it was when the router was first purchased, including its password.
Resetting a router is different than restarting or rebooting it. Restarting a router just means to shut it down and then start it back up again, keeping all of its current settings intact in the process.
Turn the WRT54G around so you have access to the back of the router.
Hold down the Reset button. You may need to use a pen or other small, pointy object to access it.
Release the reset button after holding it for at least 30 seconds.
Unplug the WRT54G for a few seconds and then plug it back in.
Wait 60 seconds, giving the router time to boot up.
Connect the WRT54G router to your computer via a network cable.
Connect to the router using its default IP address, http://192.168.1.1/, and enter the default password of admin.
Change the default router password from admin to something more secure. Be sure to take note of the password this time! Storing it in a free password manager is a good idea.
Now that you've reset the router, you'll need to set up the wireless network again, plus reconfigure any other settings you had set before. This includes everything from the wireless password and network name to any custom DNS servers that were configured, static IP addresses, port forwarding rules, etc.
When finished, we recommend using the built-in feature under the Administration > Backup Configuration menu to back up the configurations. That way, you can easily restore them if you ever have to reset the router again.
What to Do When You Can't Access the WRT54G Router
If 192.168.1.1 isn't the IP address that's configured for the router, it's less of an issue than if the default password isn't correct. Fortunately, you don't have to reset the whole router just to find its IP address.
Assuming the Linksys WRT54G you have has been working as your router, you probably have several devices that have been connecting to it. Find one of those devices and check the IP address configured as the default gateway.
Not sure how to do that? See how to find your default gateway IP address for instructions on doing this in Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, and Android.
Linksys WRT54G Firmware & Manual Links
The latest firmware available for the WRT54G is available on the Linksys WRT54G Downloads page, as are instructions for upgrading the router's firmware.
Be sure to download the firmware that matches the hardware version of your WRT54G router! The hardware version number can be found on the bottom of your router. If there isn't a version number, then download the firmware for Hardware version 1.0.
The same firmware is likely used with all versions of the WRT54G router but it's still important to select the right section on the download page before you select Download to get the firmware. For example, if you have a version 2.0 router, make sure to choose Hardware version 2.0 on the download page.
Here's a direct link to the Linksys WRT54G Manual, in the PDF format, which applies to all hardware versions.
